i’ve never had an experience like i had with you all, and it wouldn’t have been what it was without each and everyone of us present.

welll…i been busy.

Back in the theatre, a place i also call home. This time, I’m doing my first opera — 𝑆𝑐𝑜𝑡𝑡 𝐽𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑛'𝑠 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐚 — yes, King of Ragtime, Scott Joplin.

Been blessed to have been involved with it since 2017 and witnessed it evolve into what it is now and it’s pretty mf stunning.

This production is a musical reimagining of Scott Joplin’s 20th century opera set in the post-slavery era, fusing classical music with American ragtime, folk music of the African diaspora, and other musical influences. Audiences will witness Treemonisha’s journey as she discovers her power and leads her community towards a new future.

HUUUUGE THANKS to producers @volcanotheatreca in association with @canadianopera @soulpeppertheatre @luminatofestival & @tolivegram for making this come to life!

(no, that’s a lie, i feel the urge daily, but honestly have been rolling thru a myriad of emotions — tearing up as i write this, shit — including but not limited to anxiety, fear, imposter syndrome, apathy, i could go on)

but today, i am here. just here. showing up, in spite of all the movies i’ve been replaying that always give the best excuses to fade to black until there’s something i can talk about other than this feeling of paralysis. and even with all of the great things going on, i’m like, “is that even good enough to share? does anyone care? i’ve been gone too long. does this negate all of the things/songs/quotes/sentiments of being strong & powerful?”

i am here. je suis ici. yo soy aquí.

today.

and i’ll try again tomorrow, cause i don’t wanna feel ruled by the things that are holding me back.

Last night, @heritagetoronto unveiled two plaques to commemorate the ground breaking, forward thinking, community building one of a kind restaurant, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗧𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 envisioned and brought to life by co-owners & co-conspirators
Howard Matthews (my Daddy), Archie Alleyne (my Uncle), Dave Mann & John Henry Jackson.

I’m still overcome with emotion, processing what all of us, the children of the Underground, were present to witness and accept on behalf of our fathers. The Four Musketeers.

What these men created and how they impacted diversifying Toronto’s culinary landscape in 1969, while also creating a space to celebrate, uplift, educate, and bring people people together to give reverence to our ancestors who made journey to Canada, is truly like no other restaurant experience I’ve ever had. The Underground was more than a restaurant, it was a meeting place for music, the arts, politics, community, healing, honouring, remembering, celebrating, family, roots, discovery and on and on and on.

There has never been a place like this in this city — and nothing ever since.
